Considering Dental Implants? Read This Post First

Is there an age limit for Dental implants? No. This issue is independent of age and brings an enormous plus of quality of life at any age. For young as well as for elderly persons, the basic medical requirements must be fulfilled, apart from this, there are no age limits. What other things should people be aware of before having implants placed?

Are there any cases in which a dental implant is not recommended? Such exceptional cases exist. For example, if a patient has to use drugs for immunosuppression, an implant should be placed. An implantation cannot be carried out while a patient is receiving chemotherapy. Even in the case of serious diseases, such as a heart attack or a heart valve defect, limitations may occur. In such cases, a specialist, in this case, a cardiologist, is usually included in the assessment.

Even though osteoporosis patients are at high risk of necrosis during certain types of therapy (antiresorptive therapy), careful consideration must be given to whether an implantation can be performed or whether it should be ignored. Pituitary necrosis is a rare side effect of bisphosphonate, a spontaneous decrease of the bone tissue on the jaw caused by severe cell damage. Factors that increase the risk of necrosis when taking bisphosphonate include corticoid or proton pump inhibitors, diabetes, changes in the blood cell count, thyroid disease, CHD, rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, or even smoking. The individual risk profile must, therefore, be classified by the dentist.

If a dental implant is placed during or after an antiresorptive therapy, certain accompanying measures such as antibiotic therapy can be used. Patients taking bisphosphonate should always inform their dentist beforehand. Should a patient stop brushing and using mouthwash for a while after getting a dental implant? No. When a modern dental implant system is used, the implant first needs to heal into the jaw bone, but the patient gets a provisional tooth replacement immediately after implantation. However, the provisional period should not be fully loaded. The healing phase of the implant usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. Then your final dentures can be fixed to the implant.
